Designed as a flexible ensemble whose instrumentation evolves with each project, Phoenix Ensemble explores a wide range of chamber music through innovative programming, new commissions, imaginative arrangements, and fresh interpretations of established repertoire. While each performance is shaped by the artists and music involved, every project shares a commitment to exceptional musicianship and creating memorable experiences for audiences.
First Light
First Light is Alan Klaus's debut solo album on Centrediscs, featuring six award-winning Canadian composers and four commissioned works. Nearly a decade in the making, the album grew from Alan's doctoral research into Canadian trumpet repertoire and evolved into an ambitious recording project celebrating the creativity, diversity, and expressive possibilities of contemporary Canadian music.
Spanning intimate lyricism, cinematic chamber music, jazz influences, and bold electroacoustic soundscapes, First Lightinvites listeners on an emotional journey through hope, grief, renewal, nature, and imagination. The album presents the first commercial recordings of several remarkable Canadian works while showcasing the extraordinary breadth of Canada's contemporary musical voice.
